Coral Rehabilitation Workshop

Objective

Acropora being prunedThe Coral Rehabilitation Workshop is a rewarding and beneficial program designed to teach students about coral rehababilitaion. At the same time students are being groomed as responsible role models to help promote conservation and further education.

Criteria

university of MissouriThis course is only available at certain times of the year when we are restocking the coral nursery. Please contact us for further details.

To enroll:

  • Participants must be of the age of consent or have written permission from a parent or guardian.
  • Must have a valid diving certificate from a recognized diving authority.
  • Show adequate buoyancy skills while diving.*

* Non divers can participate in field work only.

Outline

The workshop will involve both in-class discussions and on-hand coral transplantation activities.

  • Different fishing methods that have negative impact on fish and coral stocks.
  • The environmental impact of recreational anthropogenic activities, such as snorkeling and diving and other types of marine recreational activities.
  • The process of coral fragmentation and transplantation.
  • Methodology used on the coral nursery.
  • General coral, fish and invertebrate species identification.

Underwater activities will include:

  • Orientation dives to focus on buoyancy skills.
  • Coral fish and invertebrate identification dives.
  • Artificial Reef site familiarization dives.
  • Harvesting coral fragments for transfer to the nursery.
  • Maintenance work on the coral nursery.

On site activities will include:

  • Tagging, identifying and placement of scleractinian coral fragments in holding trays.
  • Fragmentation of soft coral species and attachment to nursery.

Day 1:

Initiation dive trip 2 dives

Day 2:

Presentation - Introduction to the coral reef project.

Presentation - Overview on local coral species identification, biology and global status/ threats.

Coral identification dives

2 dives

Day 3:

Presentation - Coral Nursery Methodology

Presentation - Selection of donor colony criteria

Location of donor colonies

2 dives

Day 4:

Collection of donor fragments

Tagging and numbering of fragments

Installation into nursery racks

2 dives

 


Cost: 17,800 baht

 

Price includes: 8 dives Full equipment: BCD, Reg, Wetsuit, Mask and snorkel, fins, weights, 2 tanks, lunches, fruit, water.
